Negative Stance were one of the most influential bands of the Greek hardcore punk scene between 1988 and 1993. Their distorted sound was at times reminiscent of bands such as Wipers, Black Sabbath and Suicidal Tendencies, but these heterogeneous elements were creatively and distinctively molded together. Their excellent lyrics ignored the usual punk norms, touched upon various aspects of a dystopian society and remain relevant even nowadays. Slavery” stemmed from a traditional Scandinavian style of “Tragedy via Wolfbrigade”, “Sound the Alarm” LP leans a lot more on a tasteful Japanese hardcore influence. The Tragedy heaviness and bleak atmosphere is still prevalent, with crushing dirges and desperate melodic riffing, but here the songs are more guitar-focused, with blazing guitar leads and huge epic guitar solos pumping adrenaline to the extreme. Set that to high-charge tempos and throw in some big gang choruses with guest appearances from bands like Think Again/ Systematic Death, NoLA, No Excuse, Vivisektio and Rotten Sound, and you’ve got your winter soundtrack all sorted out. Furthermore, and as a separate release, the band’s foreboding 1989 “Deny Your Destiny” demo and 1990 “Necrorgasm” EP have been compiled on a single LP to document the band’s early trajectory, which eventually led to the release of “Demise.” These two prior recordings include germinal versions of several songs from the first full-length, along with others such as “Necrorgasm,” “Mass Impalement,” and “Death Courier,” which were not included on “Demise.” This “EP and Demo” LP also includes four live tracks taken from the 1990 Molon Lave Festival and a 1991 gig at the Villa Amalias Squat in Athens. This unearthing and reanimation of Death Courier’s earliest scourging imprints erases a longstanding void in the availability of the most essential recordings from one of the most important pillars in the Greek black/death metal canon. -
