25 years in and Hellshock still have a lot to say and their sound is getting darker and heavier than ever. There’s an oppressive, almost funereal atmosphere running through the record that drags you down with it—and that’s a compliment. Hellshock kinda reinvent the wheel here creating something different that usual that I would define “progressive darkened stench core”. In It For Life was the suitably titled 1989 LP by post-apocalyptic voltage mongrels Extreme Noise Terror and Filthkick, a Birmingham-based hardcore punk group, equally as championed by John Peel as ENT were. Work For Never and Damaging Noise performed here by the former to the same exhilarating degrees as Mount Vesuvius erupts is an unholy rumble of double-pronged vocal aggression and rampages of feedback that could burst boils not even formed yet. A vampire bullied into submission and burning in the sun. Filthkick follows with Cime Without A Name, an endless, ominous dirge before being mauled by a savage dog. Between The Lines jumping in and out of focus, but never losing any of its ferocity with blistering speed and sandblasting action. -

This was release in 2001 but repress again in 2013. DOOM was a band which were pivotal in the rise of crust punk and originated from Birmingham. Doom continued with different guitarist, most notably with Dave Talbot who co-founded UK doom metal band SOLSTICE with SORE THROAT’s vocalist Rich Walker, but did not settle with four members for long playing numerous gigs as a three piece, as Pickering turned to vocal and guitar duties. This line up continued until a final split in August 1990. Following the group’s demise Pickering formed Police Bastard, whilst drummer Stick joined ENT then DIRT. This records still sound heavy, fuzzy, dirty and mean as hell!!! -

Following the differences that saw the original group implode on the road in 1989, Cryptic Slaughter’s guitarist Les Evans moved to Portland, Oregon, where he formed a new band with former Wehrmarkt and Sweaty Nipples drummer Brian Lehfeldt, plus bassist Bret Davis and vocalist Dave Hollingsworth, both formerly in local hardcore band Crud. Now metal was much more prominent and hardcore on the wane, but there are still signature tempo changes, here within longer, more complex song structures, prefacing the industrial and post-thrash crossover acts to follow. An enduring swansong for all lovers of these metalcore innovators. -

Hailing from the former northern mining town of Wigan, between Manchester and Liverpool, the short-lived Electro Hippies were a band like no other, saluted as icons of crust punk and proto-grindcore. The COLD I trip started 10 years ago. At 2019 their drummer Christos left the band for personal reasons and he was replaced by Vaggelis. The current line up is Fotis (vocals), Aggelos (guitar), Dimitris (bass) and Vaggelis (drums). With the new line up at 2021, the band stormed the studio to record their third full length (Μέρες Νεκρές) which continues the quest at their beloved post punk/cold wave genres. “Μέρες Νεκρές” pressed at 287 copies. -

It was produced by the band and Andy Faulkner, and was released on Metal Blade Records in 2002. Honour – Valour – Pride is the only full length Bolt Thrower album not featuring Karl Willetts. -

(Dirty Rotten Imbeciles), which consisted of Spike Cassidy, Josh Pappe, Felix Friffin and Kurt Brech. 4 Of A Kind originally came out in 1988, only six years after the formation of D.R.I., and includes the track “Suit And Tie Guy”, which was the first track to get a music video. -

Mercenary is the sixth album by the British death metal band Bolt Thrower. It was recorded at Chapel Studios, Lincoln, England, December 1997 to January 1998. The album was produced by Bolt Thrower and Ewan Davis. It was released on Metal Blade Records in 1998. The cover painting is titled "Contact – Wait Out", which is also the first track on the next album, "Honour – Valour – Pride". "Powder Burns" is a continuation of the song "Embers" from The IVth Crusade, and leads into "The Killchain" on Those Once Loyal. -
Abigail is a horror-themed concept album released in 1987 by heavy metal band King Diamond, led by the musician of the same name. It is the second overall album and first ever concept album in their discography (or at least in King Diamond’s solo discography, for he has been making several albums with Mercyful Fate at this time). The story revolves around a man named Jonathan La'Fey and his newlywed wife Miriam Natias as they, against the warnings expressed by seven mysterious horsemen, move in to a dark and gloomy mansion that Jonathan inherited. The night of their move, he’s visited by the ghost of his relative, Count de La'Fey. The Count shows Jonathan to a vault holding the sarcophagus of Abigail La'Fey, the stillborn illegitimate child of The Count’s unfaithful wife, who both died 68 years previous. It’s then revealed by The Count that Abigail’s spirit has taken hold of Miriam’s soul, and will soon be reborn unless he takes her life. Abigail is considered to be one of the best and most influential albums in metal, especially for one with a horror theme as well-executed as this. It’s also one of their highest-selling albums ever, selling over 175,000 copies in North America alone and becoming the first album under Roadrunner Records to break through the Billboard 200.
